Six ways to choose your picks

• The villain table. Build a cast around dramatic entrances, memorable voices or an outfit you cannot forget. Explain the appeal in one sentence at the reveal.
• Game-night favourites. Pick characters from games your group actually plays. Mix an obvious favourite with a character nobody expected.
• Animated wild cards. Try a theme built around expressive faces or unusual character designs. Shrek and Megamind are useful GIF search starting points.
• Nostalgia night. Choose fictional characters from a shared era of films, television or games. The theme gives the reveal a story instead of a random list.
• One colour, many characters. Start with the cake palette and choose images that match it. Pink and cream feel different from a chocolate cake with dark silhouettes.
• Guess who picked it. In a same-device two-player game, take turns privately. At the combined reveal, guess which person added each image.

A layout that reads well on a phone

Start with three to five different images and leave space between them. Put a larger focal pick near the top and smaller picks around the sides. Rotate the cake while decorating so that sticks do not all overlap from the front.

For a vertical story, keep the important faces near the centre of the guide. Use clean crops, readable expressions and a mix of image sizes. A busy background can make a character hard to recognise when the story is viewed on a small screen.

Use pictures thoughtfully
